The Mount Batur sunrise trek is Bali's most rewarding adventure — a torch-lit climb up an active volcano in the dark, timed to reach the 1,717-metre summit just as the sun breaks the horizon. From the rim you look out over the caldera lake, distant Mount Agung and a sea of morning cloud, often with a warm breakfast cooked in volcanic steam. It is achievable for anyone with reasonable fitness, and utterly unforgettable. Holiday Vibez arranges licensed guides, transfers and timing so all you bring is the enthusiasm.

What the trek is like

The hike begins around 3–4am and takes roughly two hours to the summit over rocky, ascending terrain. It is moderate rather than technical, suitable for anyone reasonably fit. Bring a light jacket, sturdy shoes and a torch, though your guide provides the essentials and sets a comfortable pace.

Safety & guides

Batur is an active volcano, so a licensed local guide is mandatory and well worth it for the safety, storytelling and route knowledge. We book reputable operators, and treks only proceed when conditions are right. Your comfort and safety come first.

How to reach Mount Batur

Fly into Denpasar (DPS) — usually a 7–9 hour trip with one stop via a South-East Asian hub. Batur sits in the Kintamani highlands, about two hours north of the airport, so we suggest basing in Ubud or nearby and arrange the early transfer for you.

Best time & weather

The April to October dry season offers the clearest sunrise skies and the safest trails. It is genuinely cold at the summit before dawn, so dress in layers whatever the month, and treks may be rescheduled in poor weather for safety.
