Malé is often just a gateway, but it rewards a few hours' exploration. Compact and walkable, it packs mosques, museums and markets into a small area, offering a cultural counterpoint to the resorts and an easy way to use a layover before a seaplane or flight.
Velana International Airport (MLE) sits on its own island beside the capital, with direct flights from several Indian metros. A short ferry or bridge crossing links the airport to Malé city, and onward resort transfers by speedboat or seaplane depart from here.
Malé is a Muslim capital, so dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees, especially near mosques — and be mindful during prayer times. Mosque interiors may require permission to enter. Alcohol is not sold in the city, only at resorts.
