Maafushi pioneered guesthouse tourism in the Maldives and remains the most set-up local island, with plenty of budget rooms, dive shops and excursion operators. It lets you experience the country's famous reefs and sandbanks at a fraction of resort prices, while staying in a genuine island community.
Fly to Malé (MLE), with direct flights from several Indian metros of about 1.5–3 hours from the south. From Malé, Maafushi is reached by an inexpensive public ferry (slower, limited days) or a quick speedboat of around 30–45 minutes, which we can pre-arrange.
Maafushi offers a wide range of guesthouses and small budget hotels, from simple rooms to smart boutique stays with rooftop views. Meals are typically half-board or eaten at the island's cafés, keeping costs low and flexible.
Maafushi is a Muslim community, so dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) away from the bikini beach. Alcohol is not sold on the island — it is available only at resorts and on liveaboards or floating bars nearby.
November to April brings the driest, calmest weather; May to October is wetter but cheaper. Indian travellers enjoy visa-free entry with a free 30-day visa on arrival — just carry a passport, return ticket and accommodation details.
