A week is the perfect length for Kerala, and this itinerary makes the most of it. You begin with the history and harbour life of Kochi, rise into the tea hills, dip into spice-scented wildlife country, drift the backwaters overnight and finish on the coast. Each destination gets breathing room, and the drives are scenic rather than long.
Kerala's culture is woven through the week. Fort Kochi offers colonial and trading heritage; Thekkady brings Kathakali dance-drama and Kalaripayattu; and everywhere you can savour the local table — appam and stew, Malabar dishes and the celebratory vegetarian sadya served on a banana leaf.
The overnight houseboat on the Alleppey canals is the heart of the trip. Your private Kettuvallam comes with a crew and cook, and the slow passage past paddy fields and waterside temples, capped by sunset on Vembanad Lake, is unforgettable.
Kovalam's golden crescents and famous lighthouse provide a gentle finale. After days of touring, the sea air, relaxed cafes and Arabian Sea sunsets are the ideal way to wind down before heading home.
September to March is the pleasant, post-monsoon season across the whole route, peaking December to January. June to August brings lush monsoon greenery and the traditional Ayurveda season, with atmospheric backwaters and fewer visitors.
