Chitwan National Park is Nepal's celebrated wildlife reserve, a UNESCO-listed stretch of Terai grassland, sal forest and river channels in the country's warm lowlands. Here you can track one-horned rhinos, watch elephants bathe, drift down the Rapti River in a canoe and share an evening of Tharu stick dancing. Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal and can enter on a passport or Voter ID. Holiday Vibez pairs Chitwan beautifully with Kathmandu and Pokhara for a jungle-and-mountains combination.

About Chitwan

Chitwan National Park was Nepal's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its subtropical jungle is one of the best places in South Asia to see wild rhinos, and with luck, sloth bears, gharials and even the elusive Bengal tiger.

Safari experiences

Your jungle time can include:

  • Jeep safaris deep into the grasslands
  • Dugout-canoe rides on the Rapti River
  • Guided nature and bird-watching walks
  • A visit to the elephant breeding centre

How to reach Chitwan

Chitwan is around a five to six hour drive from Kathmandu and roughly five hours from Pokhara, making it an easy add-on to either. A short domestic flight to Bharatpur is also possible. Lodges cluster around Sauraha on the park's edge.

Entry & documents

Indians do not need a visa for Nepal. Enter on a valid passport or Voter ID with no visa fee. National park entry permits and guided-safari fees are arranged as part of your package.

Best time for safari

October to March is prime time, with pleasant weather and good wildlife sightings as animals gather near water. Spring can be warm but rewarding, while the monsoon may limit access to some park areas.

Tharu culture & food

The Terai is home to the Tharu people, whose villages, cuisine and famous stick dance add a rich cultural layer to your safari. Lodges usually host a cultural evening, and local dishes lean towards rice, lentils and river fish.
