Malaysia sits close to the equator, so it's warm all year — but rainfall varies by region, and that's the key to great timing. In simple terms, the west coast (KL, Langkawi, Penang) is driest from December to April, the east-coast islands are best March to October, and the highlands stay cool whenever you visit. Get the region and season right and you'll enjoy clear skies, calm seas and comfortable sightseeing. Here's how it breaks down.

Top things to see & do

West coast: December to April

Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang enjoy their driest, sunniest spell from December to April. This is the prime time for beach days, clear cable-car views and comfortable street-food wandering. It's also peak season, so it pays to book ahead.

East-coast islands: March to October

The gorgeous islands of Redang, Perhentian and Tioman follow a different calendar. They're open and at their best from March to October, with calm, clear water for snorkelling and diving. During the November–February monsoon, seas turn rough and many island resorts close.

Highlands: cool all year

The Cameron and Genting Highlands stay pleasantly cool whatever the season, making them a reliable choice year-round. They're a lovely escape from the lowland heat and ideal for tea plantations, strawberry farms and theme parks.

Borneo & diving

Over in Sabah, the famous diving around Sipadan is strongest from April to September, with warm, clear water and excellent visibility. It's the window serious divers plan around.

Our timing tip

If you want to combine beaches with cities in one trip, December to April on the west coast is the safest bet. Dreaming of the east-coast islands? Aim for the March–October window instead. We'll help you match your dates to the right region.
