By staying in the south and taking one focused day trip to Ubud, you cut down on travel time and spend more of the holiday actually enjoying the island. For a short trip we usually recommend basing yourself in the south around Seminyak, Kuta or Nusa Dua so you're close to beaches, dining and the airport.
