Planning a Vietnam itinerary is really about choosing which regions to combine and how many nights to give each. For most first-timers, a 6–7 day route pairing the north with central Vietnam hits the sweet spot: Hanoi, a Halong cruise, Da Nang and Hoi An, joined by one short flight. This page shares a sample plan and the logic for extending it. Holiday Vibez shapes the final itinerary, flights and stays around your interests.

The ideal length

Six or seven days is our recommended starting point. It comfortably covers the north and centre, the two regions most first-timers want, without long overland days. Shorter trips work if you stick to the north; longer ones let you reach the south too.

How to combine regions

Think of Vietnam in three blocks. The north (Hanoi, Halong, Ninh Binh, Sapa) is culture and karst scenery; the centre (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue) is beaches and heritage; the south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong, Phu Quoc) is tropical energy. Pick two for a week, all three for 9–12 days.

Extending the trip

  • Add Sapa's rice-terrace trek to the north
  • Slot in Hue's Imperial City in the centre
  • Continue to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong in the south
  • Finish on a beach in Phu Quoc or Nha Trang
Each addition needs a night or two more.

Best time for this route

For a north-plus-central itinerary, February to April gives the most reliable weather across both regions. We'll always check your dates and suggest adjustments if the seasons don't quite line up.

Visa & practicalities

You'll need a Vietnam e-Visa, usually issued in 3–5 working days, which we help you apply for. Pack for both cool northern mornings and warm central days, carry some dong, and let us handle the transfers and internal flight.
