Sonmarg, the meadow of gold, is where the Kashmir Valley rises towards its highest, wildest country. Fringed by snow peaks and threaded by the Sindh river, it is best known for the Thajiwas glacier, reached by a short pony ride or walk from the meadow. As the last major stop before the high passes towards Ladakh, Sonmarg has a genuine frontier feel, yet remains an easy day trip or overnight from Srinagar. It is a favourite for glacier views, alpine picnics and mountain photography.

Sonmarg offers the biggest mountain scenery in the accessible Kashmir Valley — glaciers, snow peaks and a rushing alpine river, all within an easy drive of Srinagar. It suits travellers who want a taste of high-Himalaya wilderness without a long trek. As a domestic destination it needs no visa or permit for Indian travellers.
The glacier is Sonmarg's headline experience. From the meadow you can walk or take a local pony towards the snowfields, which stay white and cool even in summer.
Fly to Srinagar (SXR) — direct from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, or one stop via Delhi from other cities — then drive along the Sindh river valley to Sonmarg. All local travel is by car or taxi, arranged within your package.
Sonmarg is best from around April to October, when the road is open and the meadows are green. In deep winter the high road towards Sonmarg can close under heavy snow, so we plan the standard, well-travelled circuits and keep an eye on conditions before you travel.
Even in summer, mornings at Sonmarg are cold, so carry warm layers and a windproof jacket. Mobile signal thins out towards the high country, and it is worth starting early to enjoy the meadows before the afternoon clouds build.
