Vishnu Dol is an 18th-century Vaishnava temple standing on the bank of the great Sivasagar tank (Borpukhuri) in the old Ahom capital town of Sivasagar, Assam. It was raised in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, chief queen of the Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha, as part of a group of three temples she built together on the same embankment — the towering Sivadol to Shiva, this Vishnu Dol, and the Devidol to the Goddess. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu and his incarnations, and its most distinctive feature is the tower, whose surface is worked in a honeycomb-like ornamental criss-cross pattern that sets it apart from its larger Shiva neighbour. Pilgrims come both for darshan and for the rare experience of standing in one compound where Shiva, Vishnu and Shakti are worshipped side by side, in a temple form built by Assam's own Ahom dynasty rather than in any mainland north-Indian style.
November to March is the comfortable window — dry, cool Upper Assam weather, easy for elders to walk the tank embankment between the three temples. Dol Yatra (Holi, usually February or March) and the Rath Yatra are the temple's own big festival days, and Mahashivaratri at the adjoining Sivadol brings a large fair and heavy crowds to the whole complex. Avoid June to September, when the monsoon and Brahmaputra-valley flooding can disrupt road travel.
The nearest airport is Jorhat (Rowriah), roughly 55 to 75 km away depending on the route, with Dibrugarh (Mohanbari) a further option for more flight choices. The nearest railhead is Simaluguri Junction on the Lumding–Dibrugarh line, about 16 km from Sivasagar town, with buses and taxis running the half-hour hop; Sibsagar Town station is a smaller halt closer in. By road, Sivasagar sits on NH-37 with regular buses and shared taxis from Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Guwahati, and the temples are in the heart of town on the tank bank — a short auto ride from the bus stand, with no climb involved.

Is Vishnu Dol the same as the Joy Dol at Joysagar?
No, and this confuses many visitors. Vishnu Dol is the 1734 temple on the Sivasagar tank in the town centre, built by Bar Raja Ambika. Joy Dol (Keshavnarayan Vishnu Dol) is a separate Vishnu temple at the Joysagar tank a few kilometres away, built in 1698 by Swargadeo Rudra Singha in memory of his mother Joymoti. Both are worth seeing, but they are two different shrines.
Can elderly parents visit comfortably?
Yes. The temples stand on the flat embankment of the tank in the middle of town, with no hill, trek or long stairway. There are a few steps up to the shrine itself and the walk between the three dols is short and level. Carry water and a hat if you are visiting in the warmer months.
What else can we see on the same trip?
Sivadol and Devidol share the same tank bank and take only minutes to reach on foot. Sivasagar's other Ahom-era monuments — Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar and Kareng Ghar, and the Joysagar and Gaurisagar tanks with their own temple groups — are all within a short drive, so most families cover the town in a full day or two.
Are darshan timings fixed?
Timings and festival-day arrangements are set by the temple management and can change, especially around Dol Yatra, Rath Yatra and Mahashivaratri. Confirm with the temple before you travel rather than relying on any published hours.
