Madan Kamdev is a hilltop archaeological temple site on the Dewangiri hillock near Baihata Chariali in Kamrup district, Assam, about 40 km from Guwahati. The ruins are attributed to the Pala dynasty of Kamarupa, dated roughly between the 9th–10th and 12th centuries CE; excavations begun in 1977 by the Assam Archaeological Directorate uncovered the main shrine along with the remains of a dozen more temples, most of them Shaiva. What people come to see is the stone carving — panels of Uma-Maheshwar, Ganesha, Vishnu, Saraswati, six-faced Bhairava, celestial figures, animals and a large body of erotic sculpture, which is why the site is often called the Khajuraho of Assam. Tradition holds that Madan, the god of love, was reborn here after Shiva reduced him to ashes, and the name of the place comes from that story.
October to March is the sensible window: Assam is dry and cool then, and the hillock and its stone steps are easy underfoot. Avoid June to September, when the monsoon makes the approach slippery and the surrounding hills wet for days at a stretch. Crowds are modest most of the year — this is an archaeological site rather than a busy pilgrimage temple — so it pairs well with a Kamakhya trip without adding queue time.
The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar, Guwahati, roughly 50 km away by road. Guwahati is the practical railhead, about 40 km from the site. By road, Madan Kamdev lies about 3 km off the highway at Baihata Chariali on the Guwahati–Tezpur route (NH 52 / present NH 15); it is an easy one-to-one-and-a-half hour drive from Guwahati, and taxis are readily available. There is no direct public transport to the hillock itself, so keep your vehicle for the last stretch.
This is a protected ruin on a hillock, not a large working temple complex — expect a short uphill walk and a flight of steps, which elders should factor in, and no elaborate temple facilities on site. Families should also know in advance that a good number of the surviving panels are explicitly erotic sculpture, displayed openly across the site. Facilities such as drinking water and toilets are limited; carry your own water.

Is Madan Kamdev a living temple where I can offer puja, or only ruins?
It is primarily an archaeological site of Pala-era temple ruins under the state archaeology department, with sculptures displayed in the open and in a small on-site gallery. There is worship at the shrine on the hill, but do not expect the daily ritual routine of a major temple. If puja matters to your trip, confirm with the site or the local temple committee before you travel.
How far is it from Kamakhya Temple, and can both be done in a day?
Yes. Madan Kamdev is around 40 km from Guwahati, so a morning at Kamakhya and an afternoon here is a comfortable single day by car. Allow about an hour and a half of driving each way plus an hour or so at the site.
Why is it called the Khajuraho of Assam?
Because of the erotic sculpture carved on the temple panels, which invites comparison with Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The site is far smaller and largely in ruins — the comparison is about the style of the carving, not the scale.
