About Veera Raghava Perumal Temple

The Veeraraghava Swamy temple at Thiruvallur is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu shrines sung by the Alvar saints in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, which places it among the oldest continuously worshipped Vaishnava sites in Tamil Nadu. Vishnu is worshipped here as Veeraraghava Perumal, reclining in bhujanga sayanam posture, with his consort Lakshmi as Kanakavalli Thayar. He is more commonly called Vaidya Veeraraghavan, the physician, and families come here specifically to pray for recovery from illness; tradition holds that the sage Salihotra was blessed by the Lord at this spot. The temple is built in Dravidian style with a five-tiered rajagopuram, and its tank, the Hritayathabhanasini, is the largest of any Divya Desam.

Best time to visit

November to February is the easiest stretch for elders — the plains around Thiruvallur are cool and dry then, and Vaikunta Ekadasi in December or January is the most significant single day of worship, though it draws very heavy crowds. The main annual festival is the ten-day Brahmotsavam in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April–May), which is worth seeing for the processions but falls in real Tamil Nadu summer heat and is extremely crowded. Avoid the peak of May if you are travelling with older people or small children.

How to reach

The nearest airport is Chennai International (MAA), roughly 50 km away, about an hour and a half by road depending on city traffic. Thiruvallur has its own railway station on the Chennai Central–Arakkonam suburban line, with frequent EMU trains from Chennai Central; the temple is a short auto ride from the station within the town. By road, Thiruvallur is about 45 km west of Chennai, reached via the Chennai–Thiruvallur High Road from the northern suburbs or via Poonamallee from the south and west, and Tamil Nadu state buses run through the day.

What we arrange
  • Stays near the shrine — so elders aren't driven back and forth at 4am.
  • Private transfers — pick-up from your door, not a meeting point.
  • Meals that suit the group — including pure-veg and fasting requirements.
  • Group travel — 4 people or 40, one coordinator, one itinerary.
  • Someone on the phone — when you're in a queue three states from home.
What we don't do: sell you darshan.

Temple boards run their own darshan queues and quotas. No travel agent can sell you a special one, and agencies that promise "VIP darshan" are either misleading you or breaking the trust's rules. We help you book the official slots and we get everything else right.

Travelling with elders?

Most of the people we send on yatra are over 55, or booking for parents who are. We plan shorter driving days, stays within walking distance where the shrine allows it, and we'll tell you honestly if a site involves a long climb or a trek before you pay — not after.

Veera Raghava Perumal Temple — common questions
Why is this temple associated with curing illness?

The presiding deity is known as Vaidya Veeraraghavan, the healer, and devotees traditionally pray here for relief from disease and for the health of family members. Many take the theertham and prasadam offered at the shrine as part of that prayer. It is a devotional practice, not a substitute for medical treatment.

Is Thiruvallur a comfortable day trip from Chennai for elderly parents?

Yes. It is about 45 km from Chennai by road and well served by suburban trains, so most families do it as a half-day or day trip. The temple is on flat ground with no climb or long flight of steps, though the prakaram walk and the stone floors can get hot in the afternoon — go early in the morning.

What are the darshan timings?

Temple timings and the sannidhi closing hours change with festival days and local announcements, so please confirm with the temple directly before you travel rather than relying on any published schedule. On Vaikunta Ekadasi and during the Chithirai Brahmotsavam the queue is managed entirely by the temple administration.
