Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram is the shrine of Kamakshi, the goddess Parvati worshipped as Adi Parashakti, and it is counted among the principal Shakti Peethas — tradition holds that the navel of Sati fell here, which is why it is called the Nabhi Peetham or Odhyana Peetham. What sets the idol apart is her posture: unlike most Amman deities who stand, Kamakshi is seated in padmasana, holding a sugarcane bow, a lotus and a parrot, with the noose and goad in her upper hands. Tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya installed the Sri Chakra before the sanctum, and Kamakshi remains the presiding deity of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham that bears her name. The temple sits at the heart of Kanchipuram with a gold-plated vimana over the sanctum and the Gayatri Mandapam, whose twenty-four pillars are said to stand for the syllables of the Gayatri mantra.
November to February is the easiest stretch for elders — Kanchipuram is hot and dry the rest of the year, and April to June is genuinely punishing. The temple's biggest celebration is the annual Masi festival (mid-February to mid-March), whose high point is Masi Pooram, with a chariot procession and float festival; Navaratri (Sept-Oct) and Aadi Pooram (July-Aug) also draw very large crowds. Kanchipuram is about 75 km from Chennai by road, roughly two hours on the NH-48 / Chennai-Bengaluru corridor, and Chennai International Airport is the nearest airport at about the same driving time. Kanchipuram has its own railway station within the town, a short auto ride from the temple; long-distance travellers usually alight at Chengalpattu or Arakkonam and continue by road, and Southern Railway also runs suburban services towards Kanchipuram from the Chennai side. Government and private buses connect Kanchipuram directly with Chennai, Bengaluru, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupati and Puducherry, and the temple itself is in the town centre, so the last leg is a short local drive with no climb involved.
The temple stands on level ground in the middle of town, so there is no trek or long flight of steps — it suits elderly pilgrims well. As at most Tamil Nadu temples, footwear is left outside and modest traditional dress is expected; rules on mobile phones and cameras are set by the temple administration and are enforced at the entrance, so carry as little as possible. Darshan timings and festival arrangements are decided by the temple alone — confirm with the temple before you travel.

How many days do we need in Kanchipuram?
One full day is usually enough for Kamakshi Amman along with a couple of the other major Kanchipuram temples, since the town is compact and everything is reachable by road. Two days is more comfortable for elders, or if you also want time for the silk-weaving shops.
