The Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple at Palani sits on a hill in Dindigul district and is one of the Arupadai Veedu, the six principal abodes of Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu. Here Murugan is worshipped as Dhandayudhapani — the young renunciate who has given up his ornaments, stands with his head shaven and a staff in his hand, wearing only a loincloth. Tradition holds that the presiding idol was made by the siddhar Bogar from navapashanam, an amalgam of nine medicinal-mineral substances, which is why the abhishekam offerings from it are treated as sacred medicine by devotees. The temple's panchamirtham, a fruit-and-honey prasadam prepared here, carries a Geographical Indication tag. Pilgrims come to fulfil vows — carrying kavadi, offering their hair in tonsure, and climbing the hill on foot.
October to March, when the plains around Palani are cool enough to climb comfortably; March to June is genuinely hot and hard on elders. Thaipusam (Tamil month Thai, usually late January or February) is the temple's biggest festival and Panguni Uthiram follows in March–April — both draw crowds in the lakhs, with very long waits, and are best avoided by anyone travelling with small children or frail elders unless the festival itself is the reason for the trip.
Coimbatore International Airport is the nearest airport, roughly 100 km away; Madurai Airport is about 120 km. Palani has its own railway station on the Dindigul–Pollachi line, about 2–3 km from the temple, with connections from Madurai, Dindigul, Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli. By road, Palani is on NH-83 with regular state and private buses from Madurai (about 120 km), Coimbatore (about 100 km), Dindigul (about 60 km) and Kodaikanal (about 65 km).
The sanctum is on a hilltop and is not at ground level. There are three ways up: the stone stairway (several hundred steps, commonly taken in 30–45 minutes), the gentler sloping "elephant path", and mechanised access by winch/funicular and rope car. Elders and anyone with knee or heart trouble should plan for the winch or rope car rather than the steps. Traditional dress is expected, and many devotees observe a vow period and tonsure before darshan. Confirm darshan timings, festival-day arrangements and whether the winch and rope car are running with the temple administration before you travel.

Do I have to climb the steps at Palani, or is there another way up?
You do not have to climb. Besides the stone stairway there is a gradual walking route known as the elephant path, and mechanised access by winch/funicular railway and a rope car. Families travelling with elders normally use the winch or rope car. Availability can change on festival days and during maintenance, so check with the temple before you go.
When is Thaipusam at Palani, and is it very crowded?
Thaipusam falls in the Tamil month of Thai, usually in late January or February; the exact date changes each year with the lunar calendar. It is the temple's largest festival and the crowds run into lakhs, with long waits in the queue. It is a powerful time to be there, but it is not a comfortable trip for elders or young children.
What is the panchamirtham everyone brings back from Palani?
It is the temple's prasadam, a thick preparation of banana, jaggery, ghee, honey, cardamom and other ingredients. It is made at Palani and holds a Geographical Indication tag. It is sold at the temple's own counters — buy it there rather than from unofficial sellers.
