Ugratara Devalaya in Uzan Bazar, eastern Guwahati, is one of Assam's principal Shakti shrines, dedicated to the goddess Ugratara, worshipped here as a fierce form of the Mother and identified in Assamese tradition with Tara and with Parvati. Tradition holds that the navel of Sati fell at this spot, which is why devotees rank it among the state's great seats of Shakti alongside Kamakhya. Its most unusual feature is the sanctum itself: there is no image of the goddess — a small pit filled with water is worshipped as the deity. The present temple was built in 1725 CE by the Ahom king Siva Singha, three years after he had the twin Jor Pukhuri tanks dug to its east; the upper portion was damaged in an earthquake and later rebuilt, and a Shivalaya stands beside the main shrine.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Guwahati is dry and cool and long queues move quickly. Durga Puja, in September or October, is the temple's biggest festival and the crowds are genuinely heavy for those days; Manasa Puja and the Navratri days also draw large numbers. June to September brings the Brahmaputra monsoon, with heavy rain and occasional waterlogging in the city.
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar is the nearest airport, roughly 22-25 km west of the temple, about an hour by taxi through city traffic. Guwahati Railway Station at Paltan Bazar is the closest railhead, only a few kilometres away — a short auto or cab ride east into Uzan Bazar. The temple sits close to the Brahmaputra riverfront and is easy to combine by road with Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, about 8-10 km away.
Families should know that animal sacrifice is part of the traditional worship here, particularly during Durga Puja, and offerings of liquor and meat are made to the goddess — visitors uncomfortable with this may prefer a non-festival day. Confirm darshan and puja timings with the temple before you travel.

Is Ugratara Temple a Shakti Peetha?
Assamese tradition holds that the navel of Sati fell here, and the temple is widely revered as a Shakti seat and one of Assam's most important goddess shrines. It is not, however, listed in every classical enumeration of the 51 Shakti Peethas, so you will see it described both ways.
Why is there no idol in the sanctum?
The sanctum contains a small water-filled pit, which is itself worshipped as the goddess. This aniconic form is unusual among Hindu temples and is one of the things pilgrims specifically come to see. Kamakhya, a few kilometres away, follows a similar practice.
Can we visit Ugratara and Kamakhya on the same day?
Yes. The two are roughly 8-10 km apart within Guwahati and are commonly done together in a single morning or day trip, often with Navagraha and Basistha temples added. Allow extra time on festival days, when both shrines are crowded, and check each temple's own timings before setting out.
