The Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Tirupparankundram, about 8 km from Madurai, is the first of the Arupadai Veedu — the six great abodes of Lord Murugan named in the Sangam-era Tamil work Tirumurugatruppadai. Tradition holds that Murugan married Deivanai, daughter of Indra, here after his victory over Surapadman, which is why families come to this shrine to pray for marriages and for the wellbeing of a household. The temple is cut into the base of a single granite hill known as Kandhamalai; the Pandyas raised the original rock-cut shrine around the 6th century CE, and the image of Murugan in the inner sanctum is carved from the living rock. Unusually, the rock-cut cells here hold Murugan, Shiva, Vishnu, Vinayaka and Durga together, so a pilgrim completes several darshans within one hillside shrine.
October to February is the comfortable window — Madurai's heat eases and the Tamil month of Aipasi (October–November) brings Skanda Shashti, the temple's most prominent festival. Panguni (March–April) carries the Brahmotsavam, when Murugan is taken in procession to Madurai, and Vaikasi Visakam falls in May–June. Festival days draw very large crowds and long queues, and March to June is genuinely hot for elders, so a non-festival morning in the cool months suits an older group better.
Madurai International Airport is roughly 10 km away, with taxis available at the terminal. Madurai Junction, the main railhead, is about 8 km from the temple; Tirupparankundram also has its own small station on the Madurai–Tirunelveli line, roughly 6 km from Madurai Junction. By road the temple sits about 7–8 km southwest of Madurai city centre, and city buses, autos and taxis run to it through the day.
The main Murugan sanctum is at the foot of the hill and is reached by a modest flight of steps, so it is manageable for most elders. The Kasi Viswanathar shrine on the hilltop, however, is a long, steep and largely unshaded climb of many steps up a granite hill of about 1,000 ft — treat that as a separate decision, and attempt it early in the morning if at all. Modest traditional dress is expected, as at other Tamil Nadu temples. Timings and festival processions change, so confirm with the temple before you travel.

Is Thiruparankundram the first of the six abodes of Murugan?
Yes. It is counted as the first of the Arupadai Veedu, the six principal Murugan temples, and is named in the Sangam-period Tamil poem Tirumurugatruppadai. The others are Tiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani and Pazhamudircholai — the last of which is also near Madurai, so many families cover both on one trip.
Do we have to climb the hill to have darshan of Murugan?
No. The main rock-cut sanctum of Murugan is at the base of the hill, reached by a short flight of steps and connecting mandapams. The long climb is only to the Kasi Viswanathar shrine at the summit, which is optional.
Which festival is best if we are praying for a marriage in the family?
The temple is associated with Murugan's marriage to Deivanai, and families commonly visit around the Panguni festival (March–April) and on Skanda Shashti in Aipasi (October–November). Both are heavily attended, so expect crowds and long waits. No agent or operator can arrange or shorten darshan — the temple administration runs its own queues, and everyone stands in them.
