Shiva Dol is the tall Shiva temple standing on the eastern bank of the Sivasagar tank (Borpukhuri) in the old Ahom capital town of Sivasagar. It was built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of the Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha, alongside the neighbouring Vishnudol and Devidol, while the great tank itself was dug between 1731 and 1738. The shrine houses a Shiva linga and rises about 104 feet, crowned by a gold-coloured dome roughly eight feet high, which makes it the tallest Shiva temple in the Northeast and the landmark of the town. Pilgrims come both for darshan of Shiva and to see one of the finest surviving examples of Ahom-period temple building, its outer walls carved with figures of Durga slaying Mahishasura.
October to March is the comfortable window, with dry, cool weather and clear light over the tank; December and January are the pleasantest for elders. Mahashivaratri, usually in February or March, is the biggest day here and a large mela fills the temple grounds, so expect heavy crowds and long waits on that day. Bohag Bihu in mid-April and Durga Puja at the Devidol in September or October also draw big local gatherings; the monsoon months of June to August are hot, wet and best avoided.
The nearest airport is Jorhat (Rowriah), roughly 75 km away, with Dibrugarh airport about 95 km as an alternative; taxis from both run straight to Sivasagar town. Sibsagar Town railway station is in the town itself but has limited services, so many travellers arrive via Simaluguri Junction nearby or via Jorhat, about 58 km away. By road Sivasagar sits on the main Assam highway corridor and is well connected by state and private buses to Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Guwahati (roughly 360 km); the temple stands in the centre of town on the tank bank, a short auto ride from the bus stand.

Is Shiva Dol a working temple or only a monument?
It is a living temple with daily worship, not just a heritage site. The Vishnudol and Devidol beside it are also in active use. Puja and viewing hours can change on festival days, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
Is there a climb or many steps for elderly pilgrims?
No. The temple sits at ground level on the bank of the Sivasagar tank and the approach is flat, with only a few steps at the entrance. It is one of the easier shrines in Assam for older travellers.
What else can we see in the same trip?
Sivasagar was the Ahom capital, so Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar and Kareng Ghar are all within a few kilometres, and the Rudrasagar and Na-Pukhuri temples are short drives away. Two days in the town covers the temples and the Ahom monuments comfortably.
