The Sarangapani Temple at Kumbakonam is dedicated to Vishnu as Sarangapani — "the one who bears the Saranga bow" — worshipped here in a reclining form and known affectionately as Aravamudhan, with his consort Komalavalli Thayar. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alvar saints, and is also counted among the Pancharanga Kshetrams, the five Ranganatha shrines along the Kaveri. The temple carries inscriptions from the later Chola period and was extended by the Vijayanagara rulers and the Madurai Nayaks. Its most distinctive feature is the sanctum itself, built in the shape of a chariot drawn by horses and elephants, representing the Lord's descent from heaven to wed Thayar; the eleven-tiered eastern rajagopuram rises about 173 feet and is visible from well outside the town.
October to March is the comfortable window — Kumbakonam is flat, hot Cauvery-delta country, and April to June is genuinely trying for elderly travellers. The temple's best-known celebration is the Chithirai chariot festival (April–May), when the twin temple chariots are drawn through the streets; it is a large, densely crowded event, and families with elders may prefer a quieter month. Kumbakonam as a whole fills to capacity during the Mahamaham, held once in twelve years, when the town is extremely congested.
The nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) International, roughly 90–100 km away by road, about two to two and a half hours. Kumbakonam railway station is the railhead and sits only about 2–3 km from the temple, with trains from Chennai, Thanjavur, Trichy, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai and Rameswaram. By road, Kumbakonam is about 40 km from Thanjavur and roughly 280–290 km from Chennai, and state and private buses run to Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Karaikal and Bengaluru. Autos and taxis cover the short hop from the station or bus stand.
The chariot-shaped sanctum has two doorways used in different halves of the year — the Uttarayana entrance from around mid-January to mid-July, and the Dakshinayana entrance for the other half — each approached by a flight of nine steps, so the final approach to the sanctum is not step-free. Traditional modest dress is expected, and men are generally asked to remove their upper garment in the inner shrine, as at most Tamil Nadu Vaishnava temples. Timings and any festival-day changes should be confirmed with the temple before you travel.

Is Sarangapani Temple one of the 108 Divya Desams?
Yes. It is a Divya Desam, praised in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the Alvars, and is also one of the five Pancharanga Kshetrams along the Kaveri. Pilgrims doing the Kumbakonam Divya Desam circuit usually pair it with the nearby Chakrapani and Ramaswamy temples and with Thirunageswaram.
Why does the sanctum look like a chariot?
The central shrine is built as a chariot drawn by horses and elephants. Tradition holds that this represents Sarangapani descending from heaven in a chariot to marry Komalavalli Thayar, who is said to have arisen from the temple tank. The two side entrances of the chariot are used in alternate halves of the year.
