Pazhamudircholai, on Solaimalai in the forested Alagar Hills north-east of Madurai, is the sixth of the Arupadai Veedu — the six war-camps or abodes of Lord Murugan named in Tamil literature, alongside Thiruparankundram, Tiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai and Thiruthani. Murugan is worshipped here with both his consorts, Valli and Deivanai, and the hill itself is part of the shrine's identity: the name joins pazham (fruit), udir (to fall) and cholai (grove). Tradition holds that Murugan appeared to the Tamil poet Avvaiyar as a small cowherd boy in a naval tree here and tested her learning with a riddle about "roasted and unroasted" fruit. A natural spring on the hill, the Noopura Gangai, is bathed in by pilgrims; tradition traces it to the anklet of Vishnu. The temple is administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
October to March is the comfortable window — Madurai's heat eases and the hill road is pleasant. Panguni Uthiram (March) is the largest festival, with Vaikasi Visakam (May–June), Aadi Krithikai, Thai Poosam and Skanda Sashti also drawing big crowds; on these days the hill and the Alagar Koil road below are very heavily thronged, and elders may find the waiting hard. April to June is uncomfortably hot at midday.
Madurai Airport is the nearest airport, roughly 35–40 km south of the temple across the city. Madurai Junction is the nearest railhead, about 20–25 km away, and the temple sits roughly 20–25 km north-east of Madurai city by road via the Alagar Koil road. Most pilgrims drive or take a town bus to Alagar Koil (the Kallalagar Vishnu temple at the foot of the hill) and then continue about 3–4 km uphill by local bus, share jeep or their own vehicle; some walk the hill road instead.
This is a hill shrine inside a forested reserve, reached by a narrow ghat road above Alagar Koil, with a short flight of steps at the top; the walk down to the Noopura Gangai spring involves further steps and uneven ground, which elders should factor in. Traditional dress is expected, as at other Tamil Nadu temples, and men are usually asked to remove shirts before entering the sanctum. Hill-road access and spring access can be regulated at short notice — confirm with the temple before you travel.

Is Pazhamudircholai one of the six abodes of Murugan?
Yes. It is counted as the sixth of the Arupadai Veedu, the six abodes of Murugan named in Tamil devotional literature, the others being Thiruparankundram, Tiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai and Thiruthani. Pilgrims completing the Arupadai Veedu yatra usually pair it with Thiruparankundram, which is also in Madurai.
Do I have to climb to reach the temple?
Not a long climb. Vehicles and local buses go up the hill road from Alagar Koil to near the shrine, and only a short flight of steps remains. The Noopura Gangai spring below the temple needs a further walk on steps and rough ground, which is optional.
Can Alagar Koil and Pazhamudircholai be done on the same day?
Yes, and most pilgrims do. Alagar Koil, the Kallalagar Vishnu temple, sits at the foot of the same hill, about 3–4 km below the Murugan shrine, so both are comfortably covered in a half-day trip from Madurai. Please confirm each temple's opening times directly with the temple before you travel, as they change.
Can a travel agent arrange faster darshan here?
No. Queues and any special entry are run entirely by the temple administration under the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department. We can arrange your transport, stay and timing of arrival, but nobody outside the temple can obtain or speed up darshan.
