The Parthasarathy Temple at Triplicane (Thiruvallikeni) is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu shrines sung in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham of the Alvars. The presiding deity is Venkatakrishnan, Krishna in his role as Parthasarathy, the charioteer of Arjuna at Kurukshetra, and he is shown with a moustache and with marks on the face that tradition holds were left by Bhishma's arrows in the war. What sets the temple apart among Divya Desams is that five forms of Vishnu are worshipped within the same complex: Yoga Narasimha, Rama, Gajendra Varadaraja, Ranganatha and Krishna. Believed to have been built by the Pallavas around the 8th century and later expanded by the Cholas and the Vijayanagara rulers, it is among the oldest surviving structures in Chennai and still the devotional heart of old Triplicane, with its large temple tank beside it.
November to February is the most comfortable stretch, when Chennai is dry and mild and the walk through Triplicane's lanes is bearable for elders. The temple's biggest celebration is the Chithirai Brahmotsavam in April–May, ten days of processions that fill the surrounding streets and draw very heavy crowds in peak Chennai heat; the Masi Theppam (float festival) in February–March is a gentler alternative. Avoid mid-April to June if the heat is a concern, and confirm festival dates with the temple before you plan around them.
Chennai International Airport (Meenambakkam) is roughly 18 km away, about 45 minutes to an hour by taxi depending on traffic. Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore railway stations are both about 4 km from the temple, an easy auto or cab ride, and Chennai Egmore is the more convenient arrival point for most South Indian trains. By road the temple sits just off the Marina Beach stretch on Kamarajar Salai, well served by city buses and by the Thirumayilai / Chepauk suburban stations nearby; the last few hundred metres are through narrow Triplicane lanes.
The temple stands inside a dense, old residential quarter with narrow approach streets and very limited parking, so a car will usually have to be left a short walk away — worth knowing if you are travelling with elderly family members. As in all South Indian temples, footwear is removed before entry and modest traditional dress is customary. Darshan and pooja timings, and the schedule during festival days, should be confirmed with the temple before you travel.

Why is the deity shown with a moustache?
The main deity, Venkatakrishnan, is worshipped as Parthasarathy — Krishna as Arjuna's charioteer in the Mahabharata — and is depicted with a moustache and with marks on the face that tradition holds were caused by Bhishma's arrows during the war. It is unusual among Krishna shrines and is the feature most visitors come away remembering.
How much time should we set aside, and can darshan be arranged in advance?
On an ordinary day an hour or so is enough to see the main sanctum and the other shrines within the complex; on Brahmotsavam and other festival days it takes considerably longer. Darshan is managed entirely by the temple administration and its own queue system — no travel agent can reserve, speed up or arrange special entry, and you should be wary of anyone who offers to. Plan the visit early in the day and check timings with the temple beforehand.
