Oppiliappan Temple at Thirunageswaram, just outside Kumbakonam, is a Vishnu shrine where the Lord stands as Oppiliappan (also called Uppiliappan or Venkatachalapathy) with his consort Bhumidevi, the earth-form of Lakshmi. It is counted as one of the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alvars, and inscriptions here record gifts from Chola kings including Rajendra Chola I, with later additions by the Nayak-era minister Govinda Dikshitar. Its most distinctive practice is that no salt is used in any offering to the deity — tradition holds that the Lord accepted his bride's unsalted cooking as it was, and the temple has kept the vow ever since, so the prasadam you receive is entirely salt-free. The five-tiered rajagopuram, the granite prakaras and the Ahoraathra Pushkarani tank are what most pilgrims remember of the site.
November to February is the easiest stretch for elders — the Cauvery delta is dry and comparatively cool, and Kumbakonam's cluster of temples can be covered on foot. The biggest draw is the nine-day Brahmotsavam and chariot festival in Panguni (March–April), which is genuinely crowded and hot; the monthly Sravanam day, with the Sravana Deepam, also brings large gatherings. April to June is uncomfortably hot for long temple days.
The temple is at Thirunageswaram, roughly 5–6 km from Kumbakonam town and its railway station (KMU), a short auto or taxi ride. Kumbakonam is on the Chennai–Thanjavur–Tiruchirappalli rail line with good connections. The nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli International (TRZ), about 100 km away by road, from where taxis and buses run to Kumbakonam; Chennai airport is roughly 300 km. By road, Kumbakonam is well linked to Thanjavur (about 40 km) and Chidambaram, and town buses and autos run to Thirunageswaram through the day.
Salt is not permitted inside the temple beyond the Garuda sannidhi — do not carry salted snacks or food packets in with you, and expect all prasadam to be completely salt-free, which some visitors find unusual. Modest traditional dress is expected, as at most Tamil Nadu Vaishnava temples. Darshan and pooja timings change on festival days, so confirm with the temple before you travel.

Why is there no salt in the prasadam at Oppiliappan Temple?
Tradition holds that the Lord, in the guise of an old brahmin, asked for the hand of a young bride who did not yet know how to cook; when told she could not season food properly, he said he would accept it unsalted. In memory of that, every offering made to the deity here is prepared without salt, and salt is not carried past the Garuda sannidhi. Devotees who eat only saltless food on Sravanam day observe it as Sravana Vratam.

Yes. It is counted among the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu shrines praised in the hymns of the Alvars, and is usually listed as the 60th. Pilgrims doing the Divya Desam circuit almost always pair it with the other Divya Desams around Kumbakonam.
Can we cover Oppiliappan along with the other Kumbakonam temples in one day?
Most families do. The temple is only about 5–6 km from Kumbakonam town, and the Thirunageswaram Naganathaswamy (Rahu) temple is very close by, so a half-day by car covers both comfortably. Add the Kumbakonam town temples and you have a full but manageable day. Check timings with the temples before fixing your route, as midday closing hours vary.
