Nellaiappar Temple in Tirunelveli is a Shiva temple where the lord is worshipped as Nellaiappar (also called Venuvananathar) in the form of a lingam, with Parvati enshrined alongside as Kanthimathi Amman in her own adjoining temple. It is one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams — the Shiva shrines sung in the Tevaram hymns by Tirugnana Sambandar and Appar in the 7th century — which places it among the oldest continuously worshipped Saiva sites in the Tamil country. The complex covers about 14.5 acres behind concentric walls, built up over centuries by the Pandyas, Cholas, Pallavas, Cheras and the Madurai Nayaks, with the outer walls credited to Kulasekara Pandyan I in the 13th century. Its most talked-about feature is the Mani Mandapam, where two enormous pillars, each cut from a single block of stone and carrying 48 slender sub-pillars, sound musical notes when struck; the Sangili (chain) Mandapam built in 1647 links the Nellaiappar and Kanthimathi shrines into one temple.
October to March is the comfortable window — Tirunelveli's heat eases, and the Aippasi Tirukalyanam (the divine wedding festival, mid-October to mid-November) falls in this period, along with Karthikai and Arudra Darisanam in December–January. The biggest event is the ten-day Aani Brahmotsavam in June–July, which draws very large crowds and comes in the hottest stretch of the year; elders may find it hard going. Festival dates shift with the Tamil calendar each year, so confirm with the temple before fixing travel.
The nearest airport is Tuticorin (Thoothukudi) Airport, roughly 35–40 km away, with limited flights; Madurai Airport, about 150–160 km north, has far more connections and is what most travellers use. Tirunelveli Junction is a major railhead on the southern line with direct trains from Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru and Trivandrum, and the temple is around 4–5 km from the station by auto or taxi. By road, Tirunelveli sits on NH 44 and is well served by state and private buses from Madurai (about 160 km), Kanyakumari (about 85 km) and Rameswaram; the temple is in the old town, and vehicles are usually left a short walk from the entrance.
This is a large temple — roughly 850 ft by 750 ft — and the whole circuit is walked barefoot on stone floors, which get hot by late morning. Families travelling with elders should plan a morning or evening visit and be ready for a fair amount of walking between the Nellaiappar and Kanthimathi shrines. Traditional modest dress is expected, and at many Tamil Nadu Shiva temples men are asked to remove the upper garment before entering the sanctum. The musical pillars are a protected structure and are not there for visitors to strike at will; whether they are demonstrated depends entirely on the temple staff on the day.

No. It is not a Jyotirlinga. Its rank is within the Tamil Saiva tradition: it is one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva shrines praised in the Tevaram hymns, and it is the principal Shiva temple of the Tirunelveli region.
Can we actually hear the musical pillars?
The pillars in the Mani Mandapam do produce notes when tapped, but they are an old and protected structure. Visitors are not permitted to strike them freely; any demonstration is at the discretion of temple staff on the day. Treat it as a possibility, not a guarantee.
How much time should we set aside, and can it be combined with other temples?
Most pilgrims spend one and a half to two hours inside, more during festivals. Tirunelveli works well as a base — Papanasam and the Thamirabarani sites are nearby, and Kanyakumari is about 85 km south, so a two-day plan covers the region comfortably. Darshan timings are set by the temple and can change, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
