Nagore Dargah is the shrine built over the tomb of the Sufi saint Hazrat Syed Abdul Qadir Shahul Hamid (1504–1570), who came to the coastal town of Nagore around 1533 and is remembered locally as Nagore Andavar, the "ruler of Nagore". Tradition holds that he cured an affliction of the Thanjavur Nayak ruler Achuthappa Nayak, and the shrine has been supported by Hindu patrons ever since — the tallest of its five minarets, about 40 metres high, was built by the Maratha ruler of Thanjavur, Pratap Singh, in the eighteenth century. The complex spreads over roughly two hectares with four gateways, a gold-plated dome and the sacred tank known as Shifa Gunta. It is one of the few shrines in South India where Hindu and Muslim pilgrims come in comparable numbers, and where nadaswaram — an instrument of Tamil temple tradition — is played during the annual festival.
November to February is the comfortable window: the coastal humidity eases, the northeast monsoon has largely passed, and days are pleasant for elders. The big event is the fourteen-day Kanduri festival (Urs), marking the saint's death anniversary; because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar, its dates shift by roughly eleven days each year, so check the date before booking. Kanduri draws very large crowds and the lanes around the dargah become extremely congested — pilgrims travelling with elderly family members often prefer an ordinary weekday outside the festival.
The nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli International (around 145–150 km, roughly four hours by road via Thanjavur and Kumbakonam). Nagore has its own small railway station (code NCR) on the coastal line, and Nagapattinam is the larger railhead about 8 km away with more train options; both have autos and share taxis to the dargah. By road, Nagore sits on the East Coast Road corridor — about 14 km from Karaikal, roughly 12 km from Velankanni, and around 85–90 km from Thanjavur, with regular state and private buses.
Modest dress is expected — clothing that covers the shoulders and the legs below the knee — and footwear is left outside. Heads are usually covered inside the complex, so carry a scarf or cap. Tamil Nadu Tourism's own listing states that women are not permitted into the innermost tomb chamber; women can enter the wider complex, but confirm the current practice at the dargah office on arrival. The site is largely flat with no climb, which suits elderly pilgrims.

Can non-Muslims visit Nagore Dargah?
Yes. The dargah is open to people of all faiths and has been supported by Hindu devotees and rulers for centuries — a large share of the daily visitors are Hindus. Christian pilgrims combining the trip with Velankanni also visit. Only the ordinary rules of modest dress, removing footwear and covering the head apply.
When is the Kanduri festival held?
Kanduri, or the Urs, is a fourteen-day observance of the saint's death anniversary fixed by the Islamic lunar calendar, so the Gregorian dates move earlier by about eleven days every year. Confirm the exact dates with the dargah before you book travel or rooms, as accommodation in Nagore and Nagapattinam fills up well in advance.
Can Nagore Dargah be combined with other pilgrimage stops?
Yes, and most families do. Velankanni's Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health is about 12 km away, Karaikal roughly 14 km, and the Chola temple towns of Kumbakonam and Thanjavur are within a comfortable day's drive. A two-day circuit from Thanjavur covers all of these without rushing.
