Nachiyar Kovil, properly the Thirunaraiyur Nambi Temple, stands in the village of Thirunarayur just outside Kumbakonam and is one of the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alvar saints. What sets it apart among Vishnu temples is that the Goddess — Nachiyar, the consort — takes precedence over the Lord, Srinivasa Perumal: tradition here gives her the first place in processions and the first offering of food, and the temple carries her name rather than his. Its most talked-about feature is the Kal Garudan, a stone image of Garuda that, by long-standing temple custom, is said to grow heavier as it is carried out from the sanctum through the corridors and into the streets, needing progressively more bearers. The temple is associated with Thirumangai Alvar, and the present structure — a five-tiered eastern gopuram in Dravidian style — reflects centuries of building, with the medieval Cholas and later Vijayanagara rulers credited with additions to a much older foundation.
November to February is the comfortable window, when the Kaveri delta cools down and touring several Kumbakonam temples in a day is bearable for elders. Margazhi (December–January) brings the ten-day Brahmotsavam, and Panguni (March–April) brings the Garuda Sevai, when the Kal Garudan is taken in procession — this is the day most pilgrims come for, and the temple and village streets get very crowded and slow-moving. April to June is genuinely hot and best avoided by older travellers.
The temple is in Thirunarayur village, a short drive east of Kumbakonam on the Kumbakonam–Thiruvarur road — sources place it between about 6 and 10 km from the town, so allow 20–30 minutes by car or auto. Kumbakonam is the nearest railhead, well connected to Chennai, Trichy, Thanjavur and Madurai. The nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), roughly 95 km away; Chennai airport is about 280 km by road.
The temple follows the traditional South Indian Vaishnava dress code — dhoti or trousers for men, saree or salwar for women; shorts and sleeveless wear are usually turned away. As at most Tamil Nadu Vishnu temples, men are commonly asked to remove shirts and vests before entering the inner shrine. Timings and festival processions can change without notice, so confirm with the temple before you travel, especially if you are planning around the Garuda Sevai.

Why is it called Nachiyar Kovil and not by the Lord's name?
Because the Goddess Nachiyar is given primacy at this Divya Desam. Temple tradition gives her the first honours in processions and the first offering, with Srinivasa Perumal following — an arrangement uncommon among Vishnu temples, and the reason the shrine is popularly known by her name.
What is the Kal Garudan and can we see it every day?
It is the stone Garuda image the temple is famous for, which tradition holds becomes heavier as it is carried outward from the sanctum, requiring more and more bearers. The image can be seen in its shrine on ordinary days, but the procession that the stories describe happens only on specific festival days, chiefly during Panguni. Check with the temple office for the current year's dates before planning around it.
Can we combine Nachiyar Kovil with other Kumbakonam temples in one day?
Yes. It sits close enough to Kumbakonam to be paired with the town's major temples and with Divya Desams in the surrounding delta on the same day by car. Keep the visit in the morning or late afternoon and allow for walking on stone floors, which is the main strain for elderly pilgrims here.
