Marundeeswarar Temple at Thiruvanmiyur is a Shiva temple close to the Bay of Bengal in south Chennai, where the Lord is worshipped as Marundeeswarar — the "lord of medicine" — alongside his consort Tripurasundari. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva shrines sung by the Tamil Nayanmar saints Appar and Tirugnana Sambandar in the 7th century, which places it among the oldest continuously worshipped temples in the city. The structure as it stands is largely Chola work of the 11th century with later Vijayanagara additions, and carries inscriptions from the reign of Rajendra Chola. Its most recognisable features are the two seven-tiered gopurams, the large temple tank, and a hall of thirty-six carved pillars bearing Somaskanda panels. Because of the name, many devotees come here to pray for relief from illness and for the health of family members.
November to February is the comfortable window, when Chennai's heat and humidity ease and a morning visit is easy on elders; April to June is genuinely hot on the coast. The biggest gathering is the Panguni Brahmotsavam (March–April), and Maha Shivaratri (February–March) draws large night crowds — both are busy but manageable compared with the big hill shrines. Mondays and Pradosham days also see heavier footfall.
Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam is roughly 15 km away, about 45 minutes to an hour by taxi depending on traffic. Chennai Central and Egmore are around 15–17 km to the north; far more convenient is Thiruvanmiyur station on the MRTS suburban line, a few minutes' walk from the temple. By road the temple sits just off East Coast Road / Rajiv Gandhi Salai in Thiruvanmiyur, with city buses, autos and app taxis available at all hours.
The temple is at street level with no climb or steps of consequence, so it suits elderly pilgrims and wheelchair users reasonably well. Traditional modest dress is expected, and footwear is left outside. Photography inside the sanctum is generally not allowed — check with the staff on the day. Why is it called Marundeeswarar — is it really a temple for health?
Yes, that is the tradition here. "Marundhu" means medicine in Tamil, and temple lore holds that Shiva taught the sage Agastya the healing properties of herbs at this spot. Devotees come to pray for recovery from illness and for the wellbeing of family members. It is a place of prayer, not a substitute for medical treatment.
Is there a connection with sage Valmiki?
Tradition holds that Valmiki, author of the Ramayana, worshipped Shiva here, and that the place was therefore called Thiruvalmikiyur, which shortened over time to Thiruvanmiyur. There is a separate shrine to Valmiki within the complex.
Can this be combined with other temples in a single day from Chennai?
Comfortably. Thiruvanmiyur sits on the East Coast Road, so Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore, the Ashtalakshmi Temple at Besant Nagar and the shore temples further down ECR towards Mahabalipuram all fit into one day's drive. Start early to avoid the afternoon heat and evening traffic.
