Mahabhairab Temple stands on a low hillock in Tezpur, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, and is dedicated to Shiva worshipped in his fierce Bhairava form. Its best-known feature is the stone Shiva linga in the sanctum, unusually large and described in local tradition as a "living stone" that grows slowly over the years. Tradition holds that linga worship here was begun by the asura king Banasura, whose capital is placed at Tezpur in Puranic legend; archaeologists more cautiously date the original shrine to roughly the 8th-10th centuries under the Salastambha rulers of Kamarupa. The old structure was badly damaged in the great earthquake of 1897 and the temple standing today was rebuilt in the early 20th century, so pilgrims come for the linga and the continuity of worship rather than for ancient architecture.
October to March is the comfortable window — dry, cool Assam weather after the monsoon, and an easy add-on to Kaziranga, which is open in the same season. Maha Shivaratri, usually in February or March, is the temple's biggest day and draws very large crowds from across Sonitpur and beyond; elders who want a quiet darshan should pick an ordinary morning instead. Avoid June to September, when heavy rain and Brahmaputra flooding can disrupt road travel in the region.
Tezpur (Salonibari) Airport is about 10-12 km from the temple, with limited flights; most travellers fly instead into Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi) and drive roughly 180 km, about 4-5 hours, crossing the Brahmaputra by the Kolia Bhomora bridge near Kaliabor. Tezpur has its own railway station about 5-6 km away, with Rangapara North Junction, around 20-25 km off, carrying more long-distance trains. Tezpur town sits on the national highway network along the north bank, and autos and taxis run to the temple from anywhere in town.
The shrine sits on a small rise, so there is a short flight of steps up to it — manageable for most elders, but not step-free. Some visitor information also states that photography is not allowed at the temple; carry your phone but do not assume you may shoot inside, and follow the staff on duty. As with all temples, confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel.

Is the Shiva linga at Mahabhairab Temple really the largest in India?
It is often described locally and in tourism writing as one of the largest stone lingas in the country, and it is genuinely big, but no measured, verified ranking exists. Treat it as a notable large linga rather than a certified record.
Can we visit Mahabhairab Temple and Kaziranga on the same trip?
Yes, and most travellers do. Tezpur is a common halt on the north bank, and Kaziranga is roughly 60-70 km away across the Brahmaputra bridge, an easy half-day drive. Both are best in the October-March season.
How crowded is the temple on Maha Shivaratri?
Very. It is the temple's principal festival and thousands of devotees come through the day, with long lines. Families travelling with elderly members or small children usually find a weekday morning outside festival season far more comfortable.
