Koodal Azhagar Temple stands in the heart of old Madurai, a short walk from the Meenakshi Amman Temple, and is dedicated to Vishnu as Koodal Azhagar, worshipped here as Viyooga Sundararajan with his consort Lakshmi as Mathuravalli. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams — the Vishnu shrines sung by the Alvar saints in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham — which is why Vaishnava families treat it as an essential stop on any Madurai yatra rather than a side visit. Its most distinctive feature is the sanctum itself: a three-tiered structure crowned by the Ashtanga Vimana, with the Lord shown in seated, reclining and standing forms on successive levels, one above the other. The temple is attributed to the Pandyas, with the pillared halls and several shrines added under Vijayanagara rule and the Madurai Nayaks in the 16th century, and it is entered through a five-tiered rajagopuram.
October to March is the comfortable window — Madurai is dry and warm rather than punishing, which matters when you are walking between this temple and Meenakshi Amman on the same morning. The big event is the fourteen-day Vaikasi Brahmotsavam in May–June, with processions and the chariot, but that falls in the hottest part of the Madurai year and draws heavy crowds, so elders may prefer the cooler months. April to June without a festival reason is best avoided for the heat alone.
Madurai Airport is roughly 11–13 km south of the temple, about 30 minutes by taxi depending on city traffic. Madurai Junction railway station is the nearest railhead at roughly 1.5–3 km, close enough for an auto ride, and the Periyar bus stand in the old city is a short distance away. By road the temple sits inside the congested temple quarter off West Perumal Maistry Street area; drivers usually drop you at the gopuram and park elsewhere, so plan for a short walk.
This is a working city temple in a crowded old-town lane — modest traditional dress is expected, footwear is left outside, and parking near the entrance is limited. Timings and festival schedules should be confirmed with the temple before you travel.

It is in the same old-city area, roughly a kilometre or so away — most pilgrims cover both on the same morning by auto or on foot. Confirm each temple's darshan hours with the temple office before you set out; we do not arrange or speed up darshan, the temple board runs its own queue.
What is special about the sanctum here?
The sanctum is built in three levels under the Ashtanga Vimana, with the Lord in seated, reclining and standing forms one above the other — an arrangement you will not find in most Vishnu temples.
