The Jambukeswarar Temple at Thiruvanaikaval, on the island between the Kaveri and Coleroon rivers just outside Trichy, is the Pancha Bhoota Sthalam of water — the one of five Shiva temples in which the Lord is worshipped as the water element. Shiva here is Jambukeswarar and the goddess is Akilandeswari, who has her own large shrine facing the main sanctum. The sanctum's distinguishing feature is physical rather than symbolic: an underground spring seeps constantly beneath the lingam, so the stone and its cloth stay damp through the year and the flow rises noticeably in the monsoon. Chola inscriptions record grants from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the Hoysala king Someswara enlarged the complex around 1236–37; the temple today has five concentric prakarams, the outermost Vibudi Prakara wall running roughly 1.6 km, and a hall of nearly 800 pillars.
October to March is the comfortable window — Trichy is genuinely hot from April to June, and the temple involves a lot of walking on open stone. The grandest festival is the Brahmotsavam in the Tamil month of Panguni (March–April), with chariot processions of Jambukeswarar and Akilandeswari, and the Fridays of Aadi (July–August) along with Aadi Pooram draw very large crowds for the goddess. Those days are packed and slow-moving; elders who want an unhurried darshan are better off on an ordinary weekday morning.
Tiruchirappalli International Airport is about 15 km away, with prepaid taxis and app cabs. The nearest railhead is Srirangam station, roughly 2 km from the temple; Tiruchirappalli Junction, the major station with connections to Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore, is about 11 km away. By road the temple sits at Thiruvanaikaval on the Srirangam side of Trichy, a short auto or taxi ride from the Ranganathaswamy Temple, and city buses run frequently from Trichy town.
The complex is very large — five prakarams with an outer wall of about 1.6 km — and it is walked barefoot on stone, so allow time and carry socks if you are visiting with elders or in the afternoon heat. Modest traditional dress is expected, as at other Tamil Nadu Shiva temples. Darshan hours include a midday break at most temples here, so confirm the current timings with the temple before you travel.

Why is Jambukeswarar Temple called the water temple?
It is the Pancha Bhoota Sthalam representing water, one of five Shiva temples in South India each associated with an element. The reason is literal: an underground spring runs beneath the sanctum and keeps the lingam and its covering cloth wet all year, with the seepage increasing during the monsoon.
Can we visit Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple and Jambukeswarar on the same day?
Yes. Both are on the same island near Trichy and only a few kilometres apart, and most pilgrims cover them in one day. Plan for the midday closing break that Tamil Nadu temples usually observe, and check both temples' current timings before finalising the day.
Is there a marriage ceremony or Thiru Kalyanam performed here?
No. Tradition holds that Akilandeswari received spiritual instruction from Shiva as her guru at this place rather than being wedded to him here, so no Thiru Kalyanam is conducted in this temple. Devotees also speak of the noon puja, at which the chief priest performs the worship in female attire in memory of the goddess.
