Ervadi Dargah, in the coastal village of Erwadi in Ramanathapuram district, is the tomb-shrine of Qutb-us-Sultan Syed Ibrahim Shaheed Badusha, a saint whom tradition holds came from Madinah in the early 12th century and was martyred in battle in this region. It is one of the most visited Muslim pilgrimage sites in South India, and the whitewashed complex with its green dome, minaret and adjoining mosque also holds the graves of members of his family. Tradition holds that the saint intercedes for the sick, and for generations families have brought relatives suffering from mental illness here to pray; the dargah today has a psychiatric clinic run with the government district mental health programme on its premises alongside a school and a free medical facility. It is known locally as a shared shrine, with Hindus and Muslims both taking part in its annual observances.
November to February is the most comfortable stretch on this hot, humid stretch of the Ramanathapuram coast. The big occasion is the month-long Santhanakoodu (Urs) festival in the Islamic month of Dhu al-Qi'dah, marking the saint's martyrdom, with sandal-paste anointing of the tomb and a night procession led by a decorated elephant and folk troupes; it draws very large crowds, the district declares a holiday and extra buses run through the night, so elders should expect heavy congestion and long waits. Because the Islamic month shifts roughly eleven days earlier each year, check the exact dates for your travel year before booking.
The nearest airport is Madurai, about 134 km away by road; Thoothukudi airport is a comparable distance to the south. The closest railhead is Ramanathapuram, roughly 27 km from Erwadi, with frequent buses and taxis onward. By road, Erwadi lies about 10 km from Kilakarai on the coastal route, and Ramanathapuram is on the national highway network linking Madurai, Rameswaram and Thoothukudi.
Modest dress is expected — shoulders covered and legs covered below the knee for both men and women — and footwear is removed at the shrine. The dargah is open to visitors of all faiths. Confirm prayer timings and festival arrangements with the dargah before you travel, as they change.

Can non-Muslims visit Ervadi Dargah?
Yes. The shrine is open to people of all faiths, and Hindu families have long taken part in its festivals and offerings. Dress modestly and remove footwear as everyone does.
Why do families bring mentally ill relatives to Ervadi?
There is a long-standing belief in this region that prayer at the saint's tomb helps those suffering from mental illness, and families have come here for generations. Since 2014 the dargah has also hosted a clinic run under the government's District Mental Health Programme, so qualified psychiatric diagnosis and medication are available on the premises. Faith practice here is meant to sit alongside medical treatment, not replace it.
Is Ervadi easy to combine with Rameswaram?
Yes. Both are in Ramanathapuram district and most travellers reach Erwadi via Ramanathapuram town, which is on the same road and rail corridor as Rameswaram, so the two are commonly done on one trip along with Kilakarai.
