Devi Dol, also called Joidol, is the Goddess Durga shrine in the group of three Ahom-era temples that stand on the east bank of the great Sivasagar tank (Borpukhuri) in the middle of Sivasagar town. It was raised in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, chief queen of the Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha, in the same building campaign that produced its two neighbours — the towering Sivadol and the Vishnu Dol. Pilgrims come to it as a living Shakti shrine rather than a ruin: worship of Durga and Kali continues here, and the temple fills during Durga Puja. Its most distinctive feature is the shikhara, whose vertical elevation is worked in an undulating, rippled pattern that sets it apart from the plainer cone of the Sivadol beside it.
October to March is the comfortable window in Upper Assam — dry, mild days, and the Brahmaputra plains at their easiest for elders. The obvious pilgrim season is Durga Puja in September–October, when the temple is at its busiest and the whole tank-side complex is thronged; go then for the atmosphere, but expect heavy crowds and slow movement. Avoid May to August, when heat, humidity and monsoon flooding across Assam make travel unreliable.
The nearest airport is Jorhat (Rowriah), roughly 60–75 km away by road depending on the route, with Dibrugarh's Mohanbari airport a further alternative. The most used railhead is Simaluguri Junction, about 15 km from Sivasagar town, and Sibsagar Town station serves the town itself on a branch line. By road Sivasagar sits on NH-37 with regular buses and taxis from Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Guwahati; the temples are in the heart of town on the bank of the Sivasagar tank, so the last stretch is a short local drive or walk.
All three shrines share one complex on the tank bank and footwear is left outside, so the approach is on bare feet over stone that gets hot in the middle of a summer day. Confirm puja and opening times with the temple before you travel.

Is Devi Dol the same as Shiva Dol in Sivasagar?
No, but they stand together. Shiva Dol, Vishnu Dol and Devi Dol are three separate temples in one complex on the bank of the Sivasagar tank. Shiva Dol is the tall central one dedicated to Shiva; Devi Dol is the Durga shrine beside it. Most visitors see all three in a single visit.
Who built Devi Dol and how old is it?
It was built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, the chief queen of the Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha, as part of the same project that created the Sivasagar tank and its temples. That makes it close to three centuries old.
Is there a climb or many steps for elderly pilgrims?
The complex sits on the level bank of the tank in the middle of town, so there is no hill climb or long trek. There are a few steps up to the temple platforms and the walk is done barefoot. It is manageable for most elders, though a wheelchair user will need help on the steps.
