Chennakesava Perumal Temple in George Town is dedicated to Chenna Kesava Perumal, a form of Vishnu, with his consort Chenkamala Valli Thayar, and is long regarded as the patron deity of Chennai — the city's older name, Chennapattinam, is commonly traced to this shrine. The first temple stood from the 1640s near where the Madras High Court now sits, built in the earliest years of the settlement by the dubash Beri Thimmappa; the British East India Company demolished it in 1757 while clearing the Esplanade, and after protest, land and funds were granted to Manali Muthu Krishna Mudaliar, who raised the present Dravidian-style temple on Devaraja Mudali Street from 1762 onwards. Its most distinctive feature is that it is one of a pair: the Shiva shrine of Chenna Malleeswarar was built alongside it, so Chennai gained twin temples, Vishnu and Shiva side by side, ringed by four mada streets for chariot processions. Pilgrims come as much for this founding-story link to the city as for the darshan itself, and older accounts note that a processional idol was carried away to Thiruneermalai for safekeeping during the eighteenth-century invasions.
October to February is the comfortable window, when Chennai's heat and humidity ease and walking the George Town lanes is bearable for elders. Vaikunta Ekadasi, in the Tamil month of Margazhi (December–January), is the biggest day here and the temple is heavily crowded from very early morning. The ten-day Chithirai Brahmotsavam in April–May brings the processions and the vahana rounds through the mada streets, but April and May are genuinely hot in Chennai — plan for early morning visits if you travel then.
Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam is about 20 km away, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on traffic. Chennai Central is the main railhead and Chennai Fort and Park Town suburban stations are closer still, all within a short drive or auto ride; the nearest metro access is Chennai Central. By road the temple sits on Devaraja Mudali Street in George Town near Rattan Bazaar, a dense market quarter of narrow one-way lanes — a taxi or auto to the street corner and a short walk in is usually easier than taking a large vehicle to the door.

Is Chennakesava Perumal Temple one of the 108 Divya Desams?
No. It is a historically important city temple and the traditional patron shrine of Chennai, but it is not counted among the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alwars. Chennai has separate Divya Desam shrines such as Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane and Thiruneermalai.
Why is this temple connected to the name 'Chennai'?
The city's older name Chennapattinam is widely held to derive from this temple's deity, Chenna Kesava Perumal, which is why he is called the patron deity of the city. Historians have offered other explanations too, so treat it as the most commonly accepted account rather than a settled fact.
Can we visit the Shiva temple on the same trip?
Yes. Chenna Malleeswarar Temple was built at the same time as its twin and stands right beside it on the same street, so most pilgrims do both in one visit. Darshan hours can vary between the two shrines and on festival days, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
