Bordowa Than, also called Batadrava Than, stands at the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev, the 15th-16th century Assamese saint, poet and social reformer who founded Ekasarana Dharma, Assam's Vaishnavite bhakti tradition. Sankardev is recorded as having established the Than here in 1468, and it is regarded as the first Namghar — the congregational prayer house form that later spread across every Assamese village. Devotion here is not to an image but to the Bhagavata and the holy name, and the heart of the complex is the large Kirtan Ghar prayer hall, rebuilt in 1958, with the adjoining Manikut that holds sacred manuscripts. Pilgrims come for the association with Sankardev himself, and for the Borgeet singing and Sattriya dance that are still performed on the grounds.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Assam is dry and cool and the monsoon flooding of the Brahmaputra valley is over. The biggest draw is Doul Utsav, the five-day Holi festival in March, traced to Sankardev himself, when the Krishna image is carried in procession and the grounds are very crowded; the birth and death tithis of Sankardev, and Janmashtami and Ras Jatra, also fill the Than. Avoid June to September for heavy rain and possible waterlogged roads.
The Than is at Bordowa/Batadrava village, roughly 16 km from Nagaon town. Nearest railhead is Haibargaon in Nagaon, about 15 km away, with Nagaon well connected by trains from Guwahati. Nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, around 120 km away; the road run from Guwahati to Nagaon along NH-27 takes roughly three hours, and the last stretch to the Than is by taxi or auto.
This is a Vaishnavite Than and satra complex rather than an ancient stone temple — the original 15th-century structures do not survive, and the present Kirtan Ghar dates from a 1958 rebuilding, so come for the sanctity of the site and its living traditions rather than for old architecture. Footwear is removed and modest dress is expected inside the prayer hall. If your visit depends on prayer or performance times, confirm with the Than office before you travel.

Why is Bordowa Than important to Assamese people?
It marks the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev and is held to be the first Namghar he established, in 1468. Since the Namghar became the centre of religious and social life in Assamese villages, Bordowa is treated as the source point of that whole tradition, which is why it draws pilgrims from across the state.
Is there an idol to see, and are non-Hindus allowed?
Ekasarana worship centres on the scripture and the chanting of the holy name rather than image worship, so the main focus inside the Kirtan Ghar is the Manikut holding sacred texts. The Than is generally open to visitors; there is no widely reported bar on non-Hindus, but check with the Than authorities if you are unsure.
Can it be done as a day trip from Guwahati?
Yes. It is about 120 km from Guwahati, roughly three hours each way by road, so a same-day return is comfortable for a family. Elders who prefer a slower pace often stay a night in Nagaon town, 16 km from the Than.
What is the best festival to plan around?
Doul Utsav in March, the five-day Holi celebration linked to Sankardev, is the largest gathering, with a procession of the Krishna image on the third day. It is genuinely crowded, so book accommodation in Nagaon well ahead if you are travelling with elderly family members.
