Getting to Himachal Pradesh is easier than most first-timers expect, whichever corner of the state you are heading for. Kullu, Shimla and Dharamshala all have airports, while Chandigarh serves as the main gateway for road journeys into the mountains. Overnight Volvo coaches from Delhi remain the most popular budget-friendly option for Manali and Shimla. This guide walks you through air, rail and road so you can pick the mix that suits your time and pocket.

Reaching Himachal by Air

Himachal has three domestic airports, Kullu-Bhuntar for Manali, Shimla for the capital region and Gaggal near Dharamshala. Flights are seasonal and weather-dependent, so many travellers fly into Chandigarh instead and continue by road. From Chandigarh, Shimla is around 4 hours and Manali about 8 hours by taxi.

Reaching Himachal by Train

There is no broad-gauge line deep into the mountains. The nearest major railheads are Chandigarh, Kalka and Pathankot. From Kalka you can board the famous narrow-gauge toy train to Shimla, a slow but unforgettable climb through pine forests and tunnels.

Reaching Himachal by Road

Road is the classic way into Himachal. Overnight Volvo and semi-sleeper coaches run nightly from Delhi's ISBT to Manali, Shimla and Dharamshala. Self-drive and private taxis give you the freedom to stop at riverside dhabas and viewpoints along the way.

  • Delhi to Shimla: around 7-8 hours
  • Delhi to Manali: around 12-14 hours
  • Chandigarh to Manali: around 8 hours

Best Time to Travel

March to June brings pleasant summers ideal for sightseeing and honeymoons. July to September sees monsoon greenery but occasional landslides on mountain roads. December to February offers snow in Shimla, Manali and Kufri, perfect for a white-winter holiday.

Travel Tips

Book overnight coaches and hill-station hotels early during summer and Christmas peaks. Carry light woollens even in summer as evenings turn cool. Keep buffer time for road journeys, as mountain traffic and weather can slow things down.
