The prime season off Mirissa runs from about November to April, when seas are calmest and blue whales pass close to shore. Sailings usually leave early in the morning for the best light and water conditions. Sightings are natural events and never assured, but this window offers the strongest chances.
Boats depart from Mirissa harbour and head into deep water offshore, typically for a few hours. You may see blue whales, sperm whales and pods of spinner dolphins.
Mirissa sits within easy reach of Galle Fort, Unawatuna and Weligama, so your whale-watching morning slots neatly into a wider south-coast escape. Many travellers add a Yala safari to the east. Holiday Vibez tailors the mix to your interests.
