Khatu Shyamji is a temple in Khatu village of Sikar district, Rajasthan, dedicated to Shyam — worshipped as the head of Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha from the Mahabharata. Tradition holds that Krishna asked Barbarika for his head before the Kurukshetra war and, moved by the offering, blessed him to be worshipped in the Kali Yuga by Krishna's own name, Shyam. The temple's origin story says the head was recovered from the spot now called Shyam Kund, the sacred tank beside the temple, and that a shrine was first raised there in the eleventh century; the present structure is built in white Makrana marble in Rajasthani style. Devotees, especially families from Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and the trading communities of North India, come to offer nishan (a triangular flag) and to seek what is popularly called the blessing of "the loser's supporter" — Haare ka Sahara.
October to March is the comfortable window, since Khatu sits in dry Shekhawati country and April to June is very hot. The biggest gathering is the Phalgun Mela, held over roughly eleven days in Phalguna (February–March) and peaking on Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi, when the crowd runs into lakhs and waiting in the darshan queue can take many hours — elders and small children find that stretch genuinely difficult. Ekadashi of every month also draws heavy footfall, so an ordinary weekday outside the mela is the easiest visit.
The nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport, roughly 95 km away, with taxis and buses onward. The nearest railhead is Ringas (Reengus) Junction, about 17–18 km from the temple, connected to Jaipur, Delhi, Jodhpur and Bikaner; shared jeeps, autos and buses run from Ringas to Khatu. By road Khatu is about 80 km from Jaipur city, usually 2 to 2.5 hours, and lies within easy driving reach of Sikar town on the Jaipur–Sikar corridor.
During the Phalgun Mela many devotees walk the padyatra of roughly 17 km from Ringas to Khatu and the village roads are closed to vehicles well before the temple, so the last stretch is on foot — plan for this if you are travelling with elders. Darshan hours vary between ordinary days, Ekadashi and mela days, and the temple has its own queue system that no outside party can shorten; confirm current timings with the temple before you travel.

Who is Khatu Shyam Ji, and is he the same as Krishna?
Khatu Shyam is worshipped as Barbarika, grandson of Bhima. Tradition holds that after he offered his head to Krishna before the Mahabharata war, Krishna blessed him to be worshipped by Krishna's own name, Shyam, in the Kali Yuga. So he is venerated as Shyam, but the shrine is Barbarika's.
How many days do we need for a Khatu Shyam trip from Jaipur?
On a normal day it is comfortably a day trip from Jaipur — about 80 km each way, roughly two hours by road. During Phalgun Mela or on Ekadashi, plan an overnight stay in Khatu or Ringas, because the queue and the traffic can take up most of the day.
Is the Phalgun Mela suitable for elderly parents?
It is the most atmospheric time to come, but it is also punishingly crowded, with long standing queues, restricted vehicle access and a long walk to the temple. For elders with mobility or health concerns, a quiet weekday between October and March is the kinder choice.
