About Akshardham Temple

Swaminarayan Akshardham, on the banks of the Yamuna in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar, is a large temple complex built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and opened on 6 November 2005. The central shrine holds a 3.4-metre murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, with shrines to Rama-Sita, Radha-Krishna, Shiva-Parvati and Lakshmi-Narayan around it, so families who come for Vishnu darshan find those forms here as well. Though modern, it was raised to traditional shilpa-shastra method in Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble, without steel or concrete in the mandir structure, and stands on the Gajendra Pith, a plinth ringed by 148 life-sized carved stone elephants. Besides darshan, most visitors also see the exhibition halls, the boat ride through India's cultural history, and the Yagnapurush Kund stepwell where a musical water show is held.

Best time to visit

October to March is the comfortable window, when Delhi's heat has broken and the grounds and gardens can be walked without strain; April to June is severely hot and the summer walk across open stone courtyards is hard on elders. Diwali and the Annakut offering that follows it, along with Janmashtami and Swaminarayan Jayanti, are the biggest days here and draw very heavy crowds with long security queues. The complex is closed one day a week (Mondays) and the water show runs in the evening, so confirm both with the temple before you fix your travel date.

How to reach

Indira Gandhi International Airport is roughly 21-23 km away, about an hour by road depending on traffic. Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station is the closest railhead at around 7 km; New Delhi and Anand Vihar stations are both in the 10-15 km range. The easiest approach for most families is the Delhi Metro Blue Line to Akshardham station, from which the complex is a short walk; by car it sits just off NH-24 near the Noida Mor, with parking on site.

No electronics of any kind are permitted inside - mobile phones, cameras, pen drives, earphones - and every visitor passes through metal detectors and frisking, so plan on depositing your phone at the free cloakroom and allow extra time in the queue. There is a dress code the trust enforces at the gate: upper wear must cover shoulders, chest, back and upper arms, and lower wear must fall below the knee; sarongs are sold at the entrance if needed. Entry to the mandir and darshan is free and needs no appointment, while the exhibitions and water show are separately ticketed. The complex is large and involves a good deal of walking; wheelchairs are available near the entrance for a small charge.

What we arrange
  • Stays near the shrine — so elders aren't driven back and forth at 4am.
  • Private transfers — pick-up from your door, not a meeting point.
  • Meals that suit the group — including pure-veg and fasting requirements.
  • Group travel — 4 people or 40, one coordinator, one itinerary.
  • Someone on the phone — when you're in a queue three states from home.
What we don't do: sell you darshan.

Temple boards run their own darshan queues and quotas. No travel agent can sell you a special one, and agencies that promise "VIP darshan" are either misleading you or breaking the trust's rules. We help you book the official slots and we get everything else right.

Travelling with elders?

Most of the people we send on yatra are over 55, or booking for parents who are. We plan shorter driving days, stays within walking distance where the shrine allows it, and we'll tell you honestly if a site involves a long climb or a trek before you pay — not after.

Akshardham Temple — common questions
Can I carry my mobile phone or camera inside Akshardham?

No. Mobile phones, cameras and all electronic items are prohibited inside the complex. You must leave them in the free cloakroom near the entrance before security screening, so carry as little as possible and keep valuables with your driver or at the hotel.

Is there a dress code, and will elders in a saree or dhoti be fine?

Yes, there is a dress code and it is checked at the gate. Traditional Indian wear - saree, salwar-kameez, dhoti, kurta-pyjama - meets it comfortably. What is turned away is sleeveless or low-cut tops and anything above the knee such as shorts or short skirts; sarongs are available at the entrance for anyone who needs one.

How much walking is involved, and can elderly parents manage it?

The complex is spread over a large area and the mandir, exhibitions, gardens and water show venue are all some distance apart, so expect a fair amount of walking on stone paving. Wheelchairs are available near the entrance before security for a service charge. Allow a relaxed half day rather than rushing, and avoid the peak summer months.

Do we need to book darshan in advance?

No. Entry to the mandir and darshan is free and requires no prior booking. Only the exhibitions and the water show are ticketed, and those tickets are bought at the counter on site. No travel agent can arrange, reserve or hasten darshan here - the trust runs its own entry and queues for everyone alike.
