Old Goa was once a city grander than Lisbon, and its UNESCO World Heritage churches still rise above the Mandovi's banks. At its heart stand the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which holds the relics of St Francis Xavier, and the vast Se Cathedral with its lone surviving Golden Bell. A short tuk-tuk or car ride from Panjim, these monuments tell the story of five centuries of Goan-Portuguese history. Our heritage tours make it easy to explore them, with packages from around ₹9,999.

A UNESCO Treasure

The Churches and Convents of Old Goa were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Together they form one of India's finest ensembles of European religious architecture, blending Baroque, Renaissance and Manueline styles built by Portuguese hands over three centuries.

What to See

Old Goa packs remarkable monuments into a walkable area:

  • Basilica of Bom Jesus and the relics of St Francis Xavier
  • Se Cathedral and its Golden Bell
  • Church of St Francis of Assisi and archaeological museum
  • St Cajetan, St Augustine ruins and the Viceroy's Arch

How to Reach

Old Goa lies about 10 km east of Panjim, a 20-minute drive. Dabolim airport is around 45 minutes and Mopa about 90 minutes. Our packages include comfortable transfers and can add a knowledgeable local guide.

Best Time to Visit

November to February brings cool, dry weather perfect for walking the churches. Early mornings are quietest. The feast of St Francis Xavier in early December is a major, atmospheric event, though the site is busiest then.

Visitor Tips

Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, as these are active places of worship. Photography is usually allowed outside but may be restricted inside. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water for the walk between monuments.
