Reaching Northeast India from the South is simpler than most travellers expect. Nearly everyone flies into Guwahati (GAU) in Assam, the region's main air gateway, then travels onward by road to Shillong, Kaziranga, Cherrapunji and beyond. From cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kochi, flights are usually one-stop via Kolkata, Chennai or Delhi. Holiday Vibez plans the entire journey door to door, including the onward drives and any permits.

By Air — the easiest way

Guwahati (GAU) is the main airport for the entire Northeast and handles the most flights. From South Indian cities you will usually take a one-stop connection via Kolkata, Chennai or Delhi. Airfare is separate from the land package, so we quote it honestly alongside your ground arrangements and help you time the trip well.

By Rail

Guwahati Railway Station is well linked to major Indian cities and is a comfortable option if you enjoy rail travel. Journeys from the South are long, so most travellers combine a flight into Guwahati with road transfers onward rather than travelling all the way by train.

By Road onward

Once in Guwahati, everything moves by road. Typical drives include Shillong (3–4 hours), Cherrapunji (a little further), Dawki, and Kaziranga (4–5 hours east). Our packages include a private vehicle and driver, so you simply enjoy the scenery.

Permits (ILP)

Some states such as Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland require an Inner Line Permit for Indian travellers. This is not a visa — it is a domestic travel permit, and we arrange it as part of your booking. Assam and Meghalaya do not need one.

Best time to travel

October to April brings the clearest skies and most pleasant weather across the Northeast. The monsoon months turn Cherrapunji and Meghalaya wonderfully green but roads can be slower, so we plan itineraries around the season.
